Reusable UI Tokens, Not Reusable UI

Why centralizing design tokens beats centralizing components — and what that changes about how you ship features.

Tokens over Components

The cheapest way to keep a UI consistent across two apps is to share tokens, not components.

What we share

  • Color palette (text-primary, bg-muted, border-border)
  • Typography scale (the tracking-tighter, text-balance patterns)
  • Spacing rhythm (py-16 sm:py-24 lg:py-32)

What we don't

Components live with the app that uses them. A landing page CTA rarely belongs in the admin app's settings.

Why this scales

When two apps reuse the same tokens, they look like one product without forcing them into a single component tree.
